 The shell

Modellservice (www.modellservice.se) is a company specializing in both prototype development, production of limited series and has a history of producing precision moulds for the local ironwork/foundry. Jonas had worked with them on an earlier project with great success and Cissi, Michael’s wife and co-founder of Klutz Design, is actually from Norrtälje – so it seemed a bit like a sign from above… “it was simply meant to be”.

5 layers of glasfiber creates a shell of 5 mms thickness – not really that much you would say. But glasfiber is a hard material and it created a sitting-experience that both felt stable and supportive, as well as something that you could “sink in to” – responsive to your movements.

When the Ballerina Sweetspot glasfiber shell was lifted out of its mould, the first comments made from one of the guys in the workshop was about how incredible beautiful the curve that made up the back of the chair was.

The first comment Michael made when he sat down in it, was how incredible sensual the arm rests felt, even without the leather. He was sure that most if not all of the future owners would love to fold their fingers around this particular section of the chair almost caressing the soft leather which were to be folded around the arm rest.

Over the coming weeks of adjusting the design, developing the legs and headrest, it was clear that everyone at Modellservice was emotionally involved in the development - always stopping by to look at where "we were at". With the help of particularly Peter, Christer and Johan, the Ballerina Sweetspot quickly became more than just an empty shell. Arrow-Right.png
